Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in a landmark trial over accusations that he took millions from Libyan dictator Muammer Gaddafi to finance his presidential campaign in 2007.
Judges in a Paris criminal court cleared the rightwing politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, of several more serious charges, such as illegal campaign financing and embezzlement.
But on the conspiracy charge he was found guilty of, Sarkozy was fined €100,000 and ordered to start his time in detention soon. Prosecutors are expected to summon him within a month to give him a date.
