US government shuts down as lawmakers fail to strike funding deal

Capitol Hill impasse threatens hundreds of thousand of jobs and billions of dollars in lost economic output

The US government has shut down for the first time in nearly seven years, threatening hundreds of thousands of jobs and ushering in a new chapter of uncertainty for Donald Trump’s second term.

The shutdown, which began just after midnight Washington time, came after Republicans and Democrats failed to strike an agreement to fund the federal government into the new fiscal year.

Federal agencies are expected to launch sweeping staff furloughs and scale back public services, tipping Washington into one of its biggest political crises since Trump returned to office in January.
