Jihad Al-Shamie, who was shot dead by police as he attacked a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, had been under investigation over an alleged rape that was suspected to have occurred earlier this year.
The Home Office has said Al-Shamie was not known to counterterrorism police, but revelations of the rape investigation have raised questions about what Manchester police knew about him before the attack.
On Friday evening, more than 24 hours after the atrocity, Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Al-Shamie had a criminal history unrelated to terrorism. “This includes a recent arrest for rape, which resulted in him being bailed,” said the force.
