SNP seeks to exploit unionist rift with fresh independence pitch

John Swinney to set out plans for second referendum at party conference as Reform splits Scottish pro-union vote

The road out to the Scottish National party’s cavernous conference venue in suburban Aberdeen has in recent weeks been lined with Saltires.

Previously, the prominent display of Scottish flags would have reflected support for Scottish independence. These days, like Union flags elsewhere in the UK, they represent concerns about immigration.

Reform UK’s polling surge to almost 20 per cent, while less pronounced than south of the border where it sits at 30 per cent, has splintered the unionist vote in Scotland. That appears to be clearing the way for a third decade in power for the SNP at the Holyrood elections next May.
