Donald Trump travels to Israel as country anxiously awaits hostage releases

Hamas is due to free Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners by Monday

Donald Trump said he was confident the ceasefire in Gaza would hold as he left Washington for Israel on Sunday ahead of the expected release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

The US president told reporters “the war is over” after he brokered a peace deal to end the two-year conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.

Trump is due to arrive in Israel on Monday to meet hostage families and address the Knesset as part of a lightning trip to the Middle East during which he will also attend a “peace summit” in Egypt with 20 world leaders.
