Where does the Prince Andrew scandal leave the British monarchy’s credibility?

Government backtrack reflects confusion over how to handle new details regarding royal’s link to Jeffrey Epstein, say experts

When questioned about the scrutiny of Prince Andrew’s finances this week, Sir Keir Starmer’s reply appeared to acknowledge that the scandal around the king’s brother merited serious, open political debate.

Asked whether he would back a select committee inquiry to examine the disgraced prince’s rent-free lease of a 30-bedroom mansion from the Crown Estate, the prime minister said: “I certainly support that”.

The comment seemed a tacit endorsement of the unprecedented step of bringing a senior royal before parliament.
