Houthis signal halt to Red Sea shipping attacks

Yemeni militant group’s campaign has caused two years of disruption to global maritime trade

Yemen’s Houthis have signalled a halt to their attacks on Israel and commercial ships in the Red Sea following the ceasefire in Gaza, potentially ending more than two years of disruption to global maritime trade.

Writing to the armed wing of Palestinian militant group Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, in an undated letter published online, the Houthis suggested their campaign of attacks had stopped for now.

“We are closely monitoring developments and declare that if the enemy resumes its aggression against Gaza, we will return to our military operations deep inside the Zionist entity, and we will reinstate the ban on Israeli navigation in the Red and Arabian Seas,” read the letter from the Houthi military’s chief of staff Major General Yusuf Hassan al-Madani, which was posted on X by the Houthis’ spokesman on Sunday.
