White House signals it will cut tariffs to help ease high food prices

Officials indicate changes coming to levies on imported goods including coffee and bananas

Top US officials have signalled they will cut tariffs on popular groceries, as pressure mounts on the White House to tackle a cost of living crisis that began under Joe Biden but continues to impact millions of Americans.

Kevin Hassett, chair of the National Economic Council, indicated at an event in Washington that the administration may adjust tariffs on food items to help lower prices.

“One of the things that people have been talking about just the last few days is thinking about changing tariffs for foodstuffs,” Hassett said. “I think that there are going to be more changes.”
