TotalEnergies chief becomes rare CEO to attend UN COP30

Patrick Pouyanné to join decarbonisation event in Brazil

TotalEnergies chief executive Patrick Pouyanné will be one of the few high-profile business leaders to join the COP30 climate summit, where sustainability executives were more prominent among corporate attendees.

The French businessman will speak on Friday at an event co-hosted by the Brazilian COP presidency, Total told the Financial Times, to back a decarbonisation initiative launched by 50 companies including BP and ExxonMobil at COP28 in Dubai in 2023.

The members of the so-called Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter meeting on Friday represent more than half of global production and have pledged to work towards a 2030 target for “near zero” emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
