France’s 2026 budget risks being rejected by lawmakers in a first reading later this week, exposing the difficulties for Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu navigating the country’s political turmoil.
Lecornu, who is seeking to get the budget adopted by the end of the year, faces a test to his methods on Sunday when parliament is set to hold a vote on the initial draft of the budget.
In a concession to the Socialist party, the voting bloc that ensures Lecornu’s survival, the premier forfeited a constitutional power to circumvent parliament and pledged to get lawmakers’ backing for the budget.
