A Brazilian Supreme Court judge has ordered ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to begin a 27-year jail sentence following his conviction for plotting a coup d’état after his 2022 election loss.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Tuesday ruled Bolsonaro’s legal appeals had been exhausted, and decreed that the far-right populist remain in a Brasília federal police cell where he has been detained since Saturday after being deemed a flight risk.
Moraes also ordered the arrest of six other convicts, including former government ministers and top army personnel, who were found guilty in September of conspiring to illegally keep Bolsonaro in power.
