BP scraps plans for Teesside hydrogen and carbon capture scheme

Move by oil major paves way for data centre at former steel site in northern England

Oil major BP has abandoned plans to build a hydrogen and carbon capture scheme at Teesside in north-east England, paving the way for a big artificial intelligence data centre on the site instead.

The move, confirmed by the company in a statement to the FT on Monday, comes after ministers recently selected the former steel site in Teesside as the location for one of their so-called AI growth zones.

The vision includes the largest data centre in Europe, at nearly 500,000 square metres, which has been supported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
