Canada names Mark Wiseman as US ambassador

Former BlackRock executive will be tasked with helping to reset relations with Washington ahead of 2026 trade review

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has named ex-BlackRock executive Mark Wiseman as ambassador to Washington, as Ottawa moves to reset its strained relationship with the White House ahead of a review of its trade deal with the US and Mexico.

Wiseman would start the role in February “as a core member of our negotiating team”, Carney said on Monday. He succeeds Kirsten Hillman, who announced earlier this month that she was stepping down after six years in the post.

“Wiseman brings immense experience, extensive contacts and deep commitment at this crucial time of transformation of our relationship with the US,” said Carney. Wiseman was appointed to the government’s council of Canada-US relations earlier this year.
