France to approve budget rollover to avoid US-style shutdown

Spending limits for 2025 to be extended into new year but officials warn new budget is needed to finance investments

The French government is under pressure to strike an elusive budget deal in January to finance investments in defence and industry and rein in the deficit as parliament is expected to approve rolling over the 2025 budget into the new year.

The lower house on Tuesday was set to vote on the emergency law allowing France to avoid a US-style shutdown — a stopgap solution allowing police, teachers and civil servants to function over the next few weeks. 

The challenge for Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to corral lawmakers and find a viable compromise around a new budget remains, as officials warned the emergency legislation could not be a lasting fix.
