Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first female prime minister who for decades alternated control of the south Asian nation with her fierce political rival Sheikh Hasina, has died.
Thought to be 80 — her exact birth year was contested — Zia’s death was announced by her Bangladesh Nationalist party early on Tuesday.
While the BNP did not specify her cause of death, the former three-time premier had suffered health problems including liver cirrhosis, diabetes, and heart issues, and was frequently hospitalised in recent years.
