The UK and France have pledged to deploy troops and weaponry to Ukraine, as part of sweeping security guarantees supported by the US to underpin a proposed peace deal aimed at ending Russia’s almost four-year long invasion.
A European-led “deterrence” force would provide “reassurance measures in the air, at sea and on land” following a ceasefire, with “the proposed support of the US”, leaders of Kyiv’s key allies said following a meeting in Paris on Tuesday.
The commitment to deploy troops is the most significant promise of ongoing support to Ukraine from its European allies in the so-called coalition of the willing, and comes as US-led peace negotiations gain increased momentum in a bid to force Moscow to engage.
