The US says it will seek to control Venezuelan oil sales “indefinitely”, funnel the proceeds to American companies and open the country to US oil services groups, as Washington steps up its efforts to shape the resource-rich nation.
Energy secretary Chris Wright on Wednesday said the US would sell crude in storage in Venezuela and fresh production from the country to American refineries and around the world.
“We’re going to . . . let the oil flow,” Wright told energy executives gathered at a Goldman Sachs energy conference in Miami, days after the capture of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.
