Iran’s supreme leader calls Trump a ‘criminal’ after violent protests suppressed

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says US president encouraged protesters on to the streets

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said US President Donald Trump was a “criminal” who had masterminded a “sedition” against the country that the Islamic republic had managed to crush.

In his first remarks since Iran’s security forces regained control of the streets after the most violent protests in the Islamic republic’s history, Khamenei said the US had openly encouraged the unrest.

“We consider the US president a criminal for the casualties and damage and for the insults to the Iranian nation,” Khamenei said in a public speech in Tehran to supporters during a religious occasion. “Publicly, he spoke and encouraged, while behind the scenes they helped. Zionists also helped.”
