Trump shifts tone on immigration raids — but Minneapolis remains defiant

Sceptical activists say they will keep protesting until enforcement agents leave the city

To carry out his plan to “de-escalate” militarised deportation sweeps in Minneapolis after two people were killed by federal agents, Donald Trump turned to a hardened 40-year veteran of America’s border wars.

Tom Homan, the administration’s border tsar, arrived in the city on Monday as two other key figures in Trump’s immigration crackdown — homeland security secretary Kristi Noem and border patrol commander Gregory Bovino — were sidelined by the president. 

Unlike those two camera-loving officials, Homan promised to keep a low profile. “I didn’t come to Minnesota for a photo-op or headlines,” Homan said on Thursday.
