US secretary of state Marco Rubio said talks with Iran should address Tehran’s ballistic missile programme and its support for regional militant groups, as plans for negotiations to avert a new conflict came under strain.
The talks scheduled for Friday would now take place in Oman, US and Iranian officials said Wednesday, after discussions had initially been expected to be held in Istanbul. People briefed on the talks said Tehran wanted to relocate the meeting as it sought to limit the scope of talks to the future of its nuclear programme.
Rubio’s remarks on Wednesday cast fresh doubts that the talks would lead to a breakthrough deal to prevent war, after weeks of escalating threats from US President Donald Trump.
