Donald Trump’s nominee for a senior state department role was subject to a robust grilling by US lawmakers over what they say are racist and antisemitic remarks on social media in a contentious hearing on Thursday.
Jeremy Carl, Trump’s nominee for assistant secretary of state for international organisations, was quizzed by Senate foreign relations committee members about his past comments.
In now-deleted posts on social media, Carl has endorsed the great replacement conspiracy theory, which alleges that leftwing elites are seeking to displace white populations with immigrants, and has railed against the Juneteenth federal holiday, which marks the liberation of enslaved people in Texas in the 19th century.
