Claudia Sheinbaum pushes Mexican election overhaul

Opponents say plan to cut campaign costs will consolidate ruling party’s control

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has unveiled a plan to overhaul the country’s electoral system in a move that opponents say aims to cement the power of her ruling Morena movement.

The proposal, which will be sent to Congress next week, will cut public funding for parties and electoral authorities by 25 per cent.

It will also reduce seats in the Senate from 128 to 96, shrink the National Electoral Institute, and end a list system through which parties had chosen their top candidates for lawmakers elected via proportional representation.
