US President Donald Trump has floated a “friendly takeover” of Cuba amid high tensions between Washington and Havana and a US energy blockade on the communist island.
“The Cuban government is talking with us,” Trump said at the White House on Friday. “They’re in a big deal of trouble as you know, they have no money, they have no anything right now. But they’re talking with us and maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba.”
Trump said US secretary of state Marco Rubio was dealing with officials “at a very high level”, and that “we could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba”.
