Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to invest tens of billions of dollars in military facilities in its Arctic region as part of a pledge to significantly expand defence spending by 2035.
Canada will invest the bulk of the C$35bn ($25.7bn) in “forward operating bases” in the Arctic communities of Yellowknife, Inuvik and Iqaluit along with other sites to “enable the Canadian Armed Forces to defend the Arctic without the help of allies”.
The vast Arctic region has moved higher up Canada’s military agenda in the face of threats from Russia and US President Donald Trump’s shifting expansionist rhetoric as well as the increased accessibility of the north as a result of climate change.
