Spies and subsidies: China joins Brazil’s $20bn delivery app war

Local courier group iFood and China-backed Keeta trade claims of corporate espionage and underhand tactics

Brazil’s $20bn online food delivery industry has descended into accusations of corporate espionage and shady tactics, as competition intensifies following the arrival of Chinese-backed rivals seeking a bite of Latin America’s largest consumer market.

The country’s homegrown meal courier app iFood and China’s Keeta, owned by delivery behemoth Meituan, both claim to have been the target of underhand activity over the past year that has been investigated by police.

iFood chief executive Diego Barreto told the FT it had identified a “co-ordinated effort” to steal its business secrets and gain unfair market advantages. He alleges the incidents began around the time that two Chinese contenders unveiled plans to enter the Brazilian market.
