Hellish new planet identified beyond solar system

Observations add to scientists’ expanding picture of far-flung worlds

Scientists have identified a potential new type of planet that has a sulphurous atmosphere and magma oceans evocative of earthly visions of hell.

The world known as “L 98-59 d” appears to differ sharply from the rocky and watery realms found on other so-called exoplanets that orbit stars beyond the solar system, researchers said.

The findings expand scientists’ picture of the diversity of far-flung celestial bodies, although L 98-59 d’s environment would seem to make it an unpromising target in the search for extraterrestrial life similar to Earth’s.
