Population growth across the US slowed to its lowest rate since the Covid-19 pandemic last year, thanks to a drop in immigration that is already threatening parts of the economy.
The majority of counties in the US experienced slower population growth between July 2024 and July 2025, with 40 per cent seeing a net loss in people, according a report released by the US Census Bureau on Thursday.
Even among counties where the population had previously been increasing the majority saw their growth slow or reverse, said the Census Bureau. Nationally, between July 2024 and July 2025, the population reached 342mn after growing by 1.8mn — the lowest level added since the height of the pandemic.
