Nasa’s first crewed mission to the Moon in 50 years set for blast-off

Artemis II launch has been beset by delays due to technical issues

Nasa is scheduled to send humans to the Moon for the first time in more than 50 years on Wednesday, marking the next step in its plans to establish a long-term presence on the lunar surface.

The US space agency is counting on the 1mn km flight around the Moon and back — the furthest people have travelled into space — to reinvigorate its Artemis lunar return programme, which has been beset by doubt and delays.

If the final countdown goes smoothly, the four-person Artemis II crew will blast off into the evening sky from Cape Canaveral at 6.24pm local time, in an Orion spacecraft on top of the giant Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
