Sir Keir Starmer last week declared the Iran war would “affect the future of our country”. The question being posed by some senior Labour figures is: can the embattled UK prime minister use the crisis to change his own political future?
“Iran has handed him a purpose, like Gordon with the financial crash,” said one former cabinet minister, referring to how Gordon Brown’s premiership was given new life by his response to the 2008 global crisis.
“The question is whether Keir can grasp it — is he capable?” said the ex-minister, noting that Starmer is not renowned for his political dexterity. “Turning instability into a stable landing zone is tricky.”
