The head of Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party has been elected president, becoming the most powerful leader in decades in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
To Lam, who has been party chief since August 2024, was elected to a five-year term as state president by the National Assembly on Tuesday. The party’s central leadership voted for him to continue as general secretary in January.
The 68-year-old is the first Vietnamese leader to be elected by the Communist Party leadership to hold both positions, consolidating control over party and state. His dual role echoes the leadership structure in China, where Xi Jinping is head of the party and president.
