Sir Keir Starmer has announced that all schools in England will be ordered to ban smartphones after the prime minister bowed to pressure from the Conservative Party, teachers and parents.
Starmer had previously resisted calls for a ban, saying that most schools already had restrictions in place via “non-statutory guidance” to headteachers to keep schools phone-free.
Labour announced the policy change in the House of Lords on Monday night as peers gathered to vote on an amendment to the schools bill from Conservative peer Baroness Barran.
