OpenAI’s foundation has said it will grant $250mn to promote research into AI’s impact on the economy and jobs, as the ChatGPT maker’s charitable arm aims to soften the impact of the powerful technology.
The foundation, separated from the start-up’s commercial business last year as part of a restructuring, is hiring a team and plans to begin making grants within a few months.
“We are operating from the assumption that AI will have a massive impact on the economy and that we have little idea of what that will be or where it will go,” said Divya Siddarth, who co-leads the foundation’s work on how society adapts to AI alongside Wojciech Zaremba, an OpenAI co-founder.
