Israel and Iran trade air strikes as ceasefire falters

Retaliatory barrages test 2-month truce and Donald Trump’s efforts to forge wider deal

Israel traded fire with Iran and its allies on Monday in the most serious test of the fragile two-month ceasefire between the adversaries.

The Israeli military said it had struck targets in western and central Iran in the early hours of Monday after Tehran launched missiles at northern Israel. Shortly afterwards, Israel said Iranian-aligned militants in Yemen had launched a missile.

Iran’s barrage on Sunday came in retaliation for an earlier Israeli strike on Beirut that targeted the Tehran-allied Hizbollah militant group, its first since a ceasefire took effect between Israel, the US and Iran in April.
