In the autumn of 2023, a small group of officials inside the heart of the British government quietly banded together as an internal resistance force — a “Rebel Alliance”, named after the idealistic dissidents from Star Wars.
Their common enemy was a gargantuan US technology company, backed by a secretive billionaire founder and the might of the US military — Palantir.
The software company was seeking to embed itself as one of the British state’s most trusted technology suppliers, and was on the brink of securing the contract that would become its crown jewel and open doors across Whitehall: a £330mn, seven-year deal with England’s National Health Service.
