India police detain opposition leader Rahul Gandhi as tensions rise

Opposition leader defiant as police remove him from sit-in outside Prime Minister Modi’s residence

Police briefly detained India’s main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Tuesday as the pair staged a protest outside the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — increasing political tension after Monday’s big student demonstration over failures in the education system.

The Gandhis and other Congress party leaders and MPs had gathered outside Modi’s official residence to demand the resignation of the prime minister after the previous day’s protests, in which police repeatedly tear-gassed thousands of demonstrators and beat some of them with sticks.

“Modi-ji, try every pressure, exert all your might — this fight for justice for students will now not stop,” Gandhi posted on X, after police jostled with his bodyguards as he lay on the ground, before lifting him and carrying him away to a waiting bus.
