Keiko Fujimori sworn in as Peru’s ninth president in 10 years

Conservative daughter of former dictator becomes latest rightwing leader in Latin America

Keiko Fujimori, the conservative daughter of a former dictator, has been sworn in as Peru’s ninth president in a decade as the country grapples with rising crime rates.

Fujimori, a prominent lawmaker, was inaugurated in a ceremony at the presidential palace in Lima, the capital, on Tuesday after defeating her leftist opponent in a tight run-off election that was held in June.

Her term is due to last five years in a country infamous for cycling through presidents.
