200,000 children in England face winter eviction, warns Shelter

Charity estimates 55,000 ordered to leave privately rented homes in past 3 months

Up to 200,000 children in England face being evicted from privately rented homes this winter, with rising living costs and the removal of coronavirus support measures leaving many at risk of homelessness, according to a housing charity.

A survey by Shelter found that more than 100,000 families in England have received eviction notices or fallen behind on their rent payments in recent months, leaving them facing the threat of losing their homes after a government ban on evictions was brought to an end in May this year.

Shelter estimates that 55,000 children have already been evicted from their homes over the past three months.
