The US does not have enough Covid-19 tests to cope with the spike in demand triggered by the Omicron wave, Joe Biden acknowledged on Monday, as the country’s case rate climbs towards last winter’s peak.
The president said his administration had ramped up testing in recent weeks, but admitted it had been too late to prevent acute shortages in many parts of the country. The lack of capacity has been a particular problem over the past week as people look to get tested before meeting friends and family for the holidays.
Speaking on a call with state governors to discuss the pandemic, Biden said: “Seeing how tough it was for some folks to get a test this weekend shows that we have more work to do.”
