WHO says it is too early to treat Covid as an endemic virus

Cautious comments follow Spanish PM’s call for change in approach to handling the pandemic

The World Health Organization says countries are “a way off” from treating coronavirus as endemic after Spain’s prime minister called for a change in approach to managing Covid-19.

Catherine Smallwood, senior emergencies officer at WHO Europe, said on Tuesday that there needed to be “stable circulation of the virus at predictable levels and potentially known and predictable waves of epidemic transmission” before Covid could be treated as endemic.

“What we’re seeing at the moment coming into 2022 is nowhere near that,” she said.
