Trade war live: Copper market rattled by Trump’s threat of 50% tariff

Trump sends tariff letters to eight more countries as trade war continues

Donald Trump sent another batch of letters to countries threatening new tariff rates and confirmed the starting date for levies on copper, continuing his administration’s trade war on the US’s trading partners.

The US president posted the letters to his social media account on Wednesday, with the group of countries comprising Algeria, Brazil, Brunei, Iraq, Libya, Moldova, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka.

The tariff levels in the letters ranged from 25 to 50 per cent and will apply from August 1.

Brazil was hit with the highest tariff of the bunch, at 50 per cent. In his letter to Brasília, Trump cited the treatment of the country’s former rightwing president Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial over an alleged coup plot, as a reason for the US levies.

Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signalled his country would respond if Washington pushed ahead with a threat of a 50 per cent levy.

The latest letters follow similar correspondence from Trump to 14 other countries on Monday, including trading partners as big as Japan and South Korea. He also pushed out the deadline that tariffs would go into effect to August 1 from July 9 previously.

Trump confirmed on Wednesday that a tariff on copper would also go into effect on August 1. A day earlier, he said he would impose a 50 per cent levy on imports of the world’s most important industrial metal in a move that reverberated across commodity markets for two days.

Brazil ready to respond to US tariffs, Lula says

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signalled his country would respond if Donald Trump followed through with a threat of a 50 per cent import tax on goods from Latin America’s largest economy.

“Any unilateral tariff increase will be met under the Brazilian Economic Reciprocity Act,” the leftwing leader said, referring to a law that enables Brasília to retaliate against trade barriers imposed on its exports.

Trump cited the treatment of Jair Bolsonaro, the country’s former rightwing president who is on trial accused of plotting a coup, as a reason for the US levies.

Lula said the legal proceedings were “the sole jurisdiction of the Brazilian courts” and “not subject to any type of interference”.

Trump says copper tariffs will start August 1

Donald Trump on Wednesday night confirmed the 50 per cent tariff on copper would go into effect on August 1.

The US president posted on his social media platform Truth Social that he would impose the levy “after receiving a robust NATIONAL SECURITY ASSESSMENT”.

“Copper is necessary for Semiconductors, Aircraft, Ships, Ammunition, Data Centers, Lithium-ion Batteries, Radar Systems, Missile Defense Systems, and even Hypersonic Weapons, of which we are building many,” he added. “America will, once again, build a DOMINANT Copper Industry. THIS IS, AFTER ALL, OUR GOLDEN AGE!”

The price of copper soared to record highs on Tuesday after Trump announced he would impose a steep tariff on the crucial industrial metal.

The US imports about 60 per cent of its copper, primarily from Chile, with the rest met by domestic mines or recycled scrap.
