Donald Trump encouraged a crowd of his supporters to try and overturn the 2020 election result, a senior Democrat has said as he opened the first in a series of public hearings into last year’s attack on the US Capitol.
Bennie Thompson, the chair of the bipartisan committee investigating the events of January 6 2021, blamed the former president directly for the chaos unleashed that day at the start of the 90-minute primetime televised hearing.
“They did so at the encouragement of the president of the United States, the president of the United States, trying to stop the transfer of power, a precedent that had stood for 220 years, even as our democracy at faced is most difficult tests,” Thompson said.
