As it happened: Donald Trump says Ukraine in position to win back all of its territory

Trump says Ukraine in position to win back all its territory

Donald Trump said Ukraine could win back all of its territory in its fight against Russia, a departure from his previous stance that Kyiv might have to agree to land swaps with Moscow to end the war.

“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump wrote in a social media post after sitting down with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, Nato, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option,” he added.

Trump’s comments marked a departure from his previous position that Ukraine would have to make concessions with Russia to end the war, including potential land swaps.

The US president also suggested Ukraine could gain territory: “Who knows, maybe [it can] even go further than that!”

Trump’s Truth Social post

Trump takes credit for ending several wars

Donald Trump described devastating, ongoing wars as finished, thanks to his leadership.

“Congo and Rwanda, a vicious, violent war that was,” the US president told the UN assembly on Tuesday.

Trump took credit for ending wars and outbreaks of violence between India and Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and Israel and Iran.

“Sadly in all cases, the United Nations did not even try to help in any of them.”

UN ‘foolish’ for not selecting Trump to build headquarters

President Trump addresses the UN in New York

For several minutes, Donald Trump recalled the rejection of his bid for the multibillion-dollar project to rebuild the UN’s 39-storey headquarters in the early 2000s.

If the UN had accepted the proposal from “a very successful real estate developer in New York known as Donald J Trump”, he said, UN delegations would now be enjoying marble and mahogany.

“But they decided to go in another direction,” he said. Trump added the UN was foolish for having given the project to another bidder, and finding itself with “massive cost overruns” and a building that he criticised as being of inferior quality.
