The number of 11-year-olds meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths in England fell sharply during the pandemic, according to official data published on Tuesday.
The results of this year’s Sats tests, taken at the end of primary school, showed 59 per cent of pupils met attainment levels set by the government in all three subjects, compared with 65 per cent in 2019.
The figures have raised concerns that the government is lagging far behind its target for 90 per cent of children to achieve expected standards in reading, writing and maths by 2030, outlined in the “levelling up” white paper published in March.
