Sri Lanka’s most powerful student body called for fresh protests against acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday, raising the prospect of renewed unrest in the crisis-hit nation.
Wickremesinghe is the favourite to replace the country’s ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa in an extraordinary vote by members of Sri Lanka’s parliament on Wednesday.
The South Asian island nation of 22mn has been rocked by months of demonstrations sparked by soaring prices and fuel shortages, culminating in the ransacking of the presidential office and Rajapaksa’s flight overseas last week.
