European politicians have come a step closer to extending the use of untouched forests for fuel but voted to stop subsidising the practice, in a sign of the conflict between the energy crisis and the EU’s climate goals.
Primary woody biomass, or wood taken directly from forests, would continue to be burnt for fuel under the EU’s proposed clean energy rules, following a key vote by the European parliament on Wednesday.
However, no more than the average annual amount burnt over the past five years would be permitted to be used in future years.
