How Robert Kime inspired a new generation of designers

The late decorator’s richly layered aesthetic took off in the 1970s but is just as relevant today

In the weeks following the death of Robert Kime in August at 76, my Instagram feed filled up with heartfelt tributes. But I was struck by how many younger designers and creatives expressed a debt to Kime — famed for being King Charles’s favourite interior decorator — and his romantic, antiques-centred aesthetic.

On her blog, Charlie Porter, millennial founder of online vintage design emporium Tat London, expressed her sadness at hearing about Kime’s passing. “[He] made my world a happier, more beautiful place to inhabit,” she wrote.
