German chancellor Olaf Scholz has surprised the country’s political establishment by choosing a regional politician as his new defence minister, a role the Ukraine war has turned into one of the toughest jobs in government.
Scholz’s office said Boris Pistorius, the interior minister of the northern state of Lower Saxony, would be sworn in by the Bundestag, the German parliament, on Thursday. He will replace Christine Lambrecht, who resigned on Monday after a series of gaffes.
Scholz said he was “very pleased” that Pistorius, “a prominent politician of our country”, had agreed to accept the job.
