Chinese authorities struggled to contain the tainted milk powder crisis at the weekend as a child in Hong Kong fell ill – the first case outside the Chinese mainland to be identified.
The news came as Beijing vowed to punish those responsible for the widespread contamination of milk powder and other milk products with the industrial chemical melamine.
The authorities sought to reassure worried parents, who flocked to hospitals to have their children tested for kidney stones after four infants died.
