CHINA'S DEVELOPERS SUFFER A PIG OF A YEAR

Even in China, however, where the financial system has been relatively isolated from the global meltdown, a sharp downturn in the property market has caused many companies to rethink their plans.

In Nanjing, one of China's most prosperous cities, at least half a dozen developers have decided that their future lies in a very different direction – they have taken up pig-breeding.

“The property market is so tough at the moment, unless you have some high-profile project,” says Shen Xinhong, an executive at Futeng Real Estate, one of the companies moving into farming. “But in the future, the government's main focus will be on what is happening in the villages. If you invest in pigs, you will have the government at your side.”
