For Prof Johnson, whose research focuses on how economic crises affect development, professional challenges come in short, concentrated bursts.
He has spent the past couple of months tirelessly analysing events and hammering out policy proposals aimed at restoring confidence in the credit markets.
“Every so often a crisis comes, I get two hours of sleep a night, and my voicemail fills up,” he jokes. “Then years go by and nobody calls me.”
